Ethics at the Water's Edge: Watching Kingfishers Without Harming Them

There is a photograph I did not take. It was early spring, and I had found a kingfisher pair prospecting a soft earth bank on a quiet tributary. The light was perfect, the angle was clean, and from where I stood I could see the beginnings of a nesting tunnel. I watched for about ten minutes, took a mental note of the location, and walked away. I have never regretted it, and I think every river watcher eventually arrives at a similar line in the sand.

The Nesting Season Is Not a Photo Opportunity

Kingfisher nesting is a fragile business. A pair excavates a tunnel in a suitable bank, often taking several days, and then raises a brood over a period of weeks. During this time the adults are working hard — fishing almost constantly to feed growing chicks — and any additional pressure from observers can tip the balance. Repeated approaches to the nest area can cause the birds to delay, abandon, or move on, and a failed nesting attempt is a whole season's reproductive effort lost.

The practical guidance is straightforward. If you find an active nest, keep well back, ideally using binoculars or a long lens from a concealed position rather than approaching closely. Do not linger directly opposite the tunnel entrance, and never position yourself between the birds and their fishing water. If the adults are hesitating to enter the nest while you are visible, you are too close — move away slowly and quietly. And please, do not share precise nest locations publicly. A well-meaning post can send a stream of visitors to a site that was doing perfectly well without an audience.

It is also worth remembering that kingfishers are protected by law in many countries, and disturbing an active nest is not just an ethical lapse but potentially an offence. The rules vary, but the principle does not: the bird's needs come before the photograph.

Fieldcraft That Puts the Bird First

Away from nest sites, good fieldcraft is mostly about reducing your footprint. Stay on paths where they exist. Avoid trampling marginal vegetation, which shelters the small fish and invertebrates the whole river food web depends on. Keep your distance and let the bird come to you — a kingfisher that is relaxed enough to hunt in front of you is worth more than a close-up of a stressed one fleeing.

Think about your timing too. Dawn and dusk are excellent for photography, but they are also peak hunting hours for the birds, and in cold weather they need to feed intensively to survive the night. If a bird is clearly working hard to find fish, give it space and let it get on with it. There will be other mornings.

Finally, consider what you do with what you learn. Recording your sightings — date, location at a general level, behaviour, whether nesting was suspected — contributes to a body of knowledge that helps protect rivers and their wildlife. Local bird recording groups and river conservation charities rely on volunteers, and a few hours of your time can matter as much as a good photograph.

We are guests on the riverbank. The kingfisher was there long before us, and with any luck it will be there long after. Watching it well, and leaving no trace but footprints, is the least we owe it.
